The managing director of an IT support company was concerned at declining levels of business and profitability together with wondering how to deal with some of the longstanding staff he had inherited from the previous MD. Although employed in the business for many years they had become more of a liability than an asset. The overall picture was gloomy and it was apparent that radical action was required. Although the MD had an understanding of the difficult decisions that had to be made, he contacted us to help support and rationalise those steps as well as taking a fresh look at their marketing and sales processes.
The time and energy that had been expended on fire fighting meant that business development and innovation had been neglected. A plan was put in place to manage the survival tasks and clear space in the MD’s mind to enable focus on the essential positive steps needed.
Turning the ship around
Weaknesses within a team can take time to resolve even with bold and positive action. Implementing organisational change at the same time compounds the difficulty. Good leaders find out what they need to do and how it should be done even if it does not make them popular in the short term. In many cases, such as this one, having the guidance and support of an experienced coach can accelerate the process, allowing progress to then be made toward more satisfying and enjoyable business tasks. Coming out of that process, operations were more efficient and the company became profitable and started growing again.
